Having More Fun Is Absolutely Good For You

"Even though you're growing up, you should never stop having fun."Nina Dobrev

Do you often find yourself so stressed and overwhelmed that you stop doing things that you enjoy? Today’s Treasure is all about Having Fun. We will explore why finding balance and finding the time to do the things that are fun and enjoyable are good for us.

I always could have fun and do things that bring me joy. However; there are times like the past couple of weeks when my dad became ill, and I was so far away that I was unable to help my brother with the logistics of caring for my mom and staying at the hospital to keep my dad company. I retreated and felt as if I was unable to enjoy myself no matter what I tried to do. I realized how important it is for any human being to experience fun as much as possible. Doing the research for this post, I came across the reasons why we should always have fun in our lives and the positive health benefits it provides. I’m happy to say that my dad is doing better and I was able to get back to my old self sooner than later.

We all have priorities in our lives, but it is essential to carve out sometime during the day for activities that are fun. Below you will find the health benefits that having fun provides in your life.

Health Benefits of Having Fun

Reduces Stress

When we are stressed, the stress hormone Cortisol spikes up to unhealthy levels, causing us to always be in a fight or flight mode. Being in high levels of stress promotes illness, weight gain and inhibit the ability of the body to heal itself. Therefore, having fun and doing activities that are enjoyable helps reduce stress and be healthier.

Coping Better

Life happens, and stressful situations will arise; however, when you take the time to have fun more frequently, it will be easier to tap into a better feeling place so that your unpleasant situation is more manageable.

Boost Energy

Leisure activities help with your energy levels. The more you do, the more energy you will feel. Stress can be both mentally and physically draining, therefore, taking the time to relax and do things that you enjoy can help you feel less tired and more capable.

Better Memory

When we are having fun our serotonin levels increase. Serotonin is a chemical that regulates many of our primary functions including our mood. When we have reduced cortisol levels and increased serotonin levels, we are able to see things clearly and therefore remembering more by freeing up our mental energy.

Better Relationships

Connecting with others and forming meaningful relationships increases when we genuinely have fun. Brene Brown, a sociologist who specializes in human connection, says, “As psychologists from Maslow to Baumeister have repeatedly stressed, the truth of the matter is that a sense of social connection is one of our fundamental human needs.”

Positivity

Having fun for over a sustained period of time helps with your mood, and therefore, you will experience being positive more often. Also, you can experience positive experiences making you a happier person.

In summary, so if you are stressed, deprived and burnt out consider having more fun and play for the hell of it. Having fun is so essential for our wellbeing, and sadly many people feel that having fun is unimportant. Contact me today for a deep coaching conversation.
